Life Course Development Interview Name Institution Date Introduction Development refers to a series of age-related changes that occur over an individualââ¬â¢s life course. Several famous psychologists such as Erik Erikson, Sigmund Freud, Lawrence Kohlberg, and Jean Piaget describe development of an individual as a series of phases or stages. In this case, a stage refers to a period in development in which individuals exhibit typical patterns in behavior and establish certain capabilities. The various stages of development as outlined in various developmental theories and concepts that would be analyzed in the paper share three main assumptions. Erik Eriksonââ¬â¢s Theory of Psychosocial development Just like Sigmund Freud, Erikson believed in the significance of early childhood. However, he believed that an individualââ¬â¢s personality development occurs over the individualââ¬â¢s entire course of life. In the early 1960s, Erik Erikson proposed a theory that provided a description of eight different stages of human development (Scheck, 2014). According to him, in each phase, individuals face new challenges and the outcome of the stage depends on how individuals handle the encountered challenges (Scheck, 2014). The stages are named based on the possible outcomes. Trust versus mistrust. This is the first stage which comes in the first year after a childââ¬â¢s birth. In this stage, children depend entirely on adults for basic needs such as warmth, comfort and food. If the caretakers provide these needs in a reliable manner, the children become attached to them and develop a sense of security (Scheck, 2014). Otherwise, the babies may develop insecure attitude or mistrust. This theory affirms the response received from the interviewee regarding her childhood years.
