Several famous psychologists such as Erik Erikson, Sigmund Freud, Lawrence Kohlberg, and Jean Piaget describe development of an individual as a series of phases or stages. In this case, a stage refers to a period in development in which individuals exhibit typical patterns in behavior and establish certain capabilities. Erik Erikson’s Theory of Psychosocial development Just like Sigmund Freud, Erikson believed in the significance of early childhood. In the early 1960s, Erik Erikson proposed a theory that provided a description of eight different stages of human development (Scheck, 2014). According to him, in each phase, individuals face new challenges and the outcome of the stage depends on how individuals handle the encountered challenges (Scheck, 2014). The stages are named based on the possible outcomes. Trust versus mistrust. This is the first stage which comes in the first year after a child’s birth. In this stage, children depend entirely on adults for basic needs such as warmth, comfort and food. How does Robert Browning convey the feelings of narrator for the woman in each of the two poems Porphyrias Lover and My Last Duchess Essay In Porphyrias Lover he wants to control her feelings when she finally does love him he kills her to control the fact that she does love him and she always will whereas if she were still alive she would stop loving him and he would have no control over that. The way the lover killed her in porphyrias lover is very sudden, and unexpected when you are reading it the start of the poem sounds like everything is fine and suddenly, he kills her. The reader expects that to happen because everything was going so well before, and why would he want to spoil it? But as you read on, it becomes clear. Porphyrias power is stopped when she tells him why she came: Murmuring how she loved me shes too weak, for all her hearts endeavour To set its struggling passion free From pride, and vainer ties dissever, And give herself to me forever. This is Porphyrias weak attempt at breaking-up with the lover. By murmuring she loses her pride. You can even imagine that she had come to him from a party when the speaker, later in the poem, says: tonights gay feast. By breaking-up with him she could possibly enjoy her evening with another man. Lust, a feeling closely linked with love. Porphyria knows that he needs her to care for him but does not want that kind of life any more. She tries to make this break-up less painful for her lover by saying that she would stay with him if she could, but cant. She lies to him. People lie a lot when love is involved due to the sensitivity of the issue. Due to the emotions the narrator is feeling begins to mislead himself, convincing himself that she enjoys his company and worships him and will give herself to him. As he convinces himself of this, he reaches the conclusion that she was his, the repeated word mine makes it clear that will do anything to stay with her. The Lover in Porphyrias Lover seems similar in the ways of being just as possessive and maybe more obsessive. However, the lover is very much in love with Porphyria and this is why he takes her life, as he killed her with her own hair when she told him that she loved him, that moment she was mine, mine. The fact that he was so overwhelmed and in love with her is shown by him killing her to save that moment and her love for him. Also, the man feels no guilt, he feels what he did is perfectly fine because God had not spoken against him, and God has not said a word. It is slightly different in My Last Duchess, because in that one it seems to be further in the past, like its history but in Porphyrias Lover it seems more recent, so it is more sudden. In My Last Duchess he doesnt make it so obvious that she has been killed I gave commands, and all smiles were stopped, it doesnt hit you straight away you have to think about it for a bit to work it out, which is different than in Porphyrias lover. Another advertisement shown in 2010, it shows a young girl, where her life is affected from the consequences of problem gambling, from the house being defecated, to the constant arguments which hints that the fathers gambling addiction is root of the problem, with a message in the end, if problem gambling is affecting your family, youve have crossed the line. Clearly seen in the two advertisement, NCPG has aimed to tug at the emotion strings of the viewers, as it is believed that it is a major factor in persuasive advertising when it aims to change viewpoints and not just to inform viewers from a logical point of view. When the advertisement resonated emotionally, a person will not only feels differently, but also react and think differently.(O'Shaughnessy and O'Shaughnessy 2004) Based on the 2014 Gambling Participation Survey, it stated that there has been a significant decrease in the probable pathological and problem gambling rates among Singapore citizens, dropping from 2.6% in 2011 to 0.7% in 2014. In order to tackle this problem the NCPG had taken the opportunity of the recent football world cup tournament and came out with a series of thought-provoking stories and snippets of life of a small boy called Andy who is facing a lot of problems and under a great amount of pressure as is father is engaged in gambling and sports betting. But unfortunately in this case it backfired because of the simple reason that in the advertisement Andy said that he was worried as his father had bet all his money on Germany and in the finals it was Germany that actually won. This became a laughing stock as it was found that instead of becoming an advertisement to stop gambling and sports betting, it le d on to show that betting and gambling can also make wonders for the people doing it, which is a totally wrong message (Green 2010). Theory Theories are the collection of assumptions which explains how the processes work. It is used to make predictions about effects of the work processes. Theories play an important role in explaining the whole processes by describing the concept (Theaker 2004). The importance of theories in the public relation is that it gives an understanding to the public relations practitioners of what and how the public relations actually work. There was no theories during early days of the public relations and had no or little guidelines to direct them in order to craft tactics, programs, strategies and communication plans. In the 19th centaury the press agents worked hard in order to create news to influence the public opinion. The model is called as the press Agentry model (GAO et al. 2013). A press agent also conducted a research or survey to manipulate the behaviour of the people. The model is one way communication in which press agents uses manipulation and persuasion to influence the behaviour of the public. Therefore, the model is used by the practitioners as a one way communication in order to sell their products and services. The public information model is also a one way communication methods but the flow of messages are accurate. It helps to provide accurate information and helps to encourage ethical practices. In 20th centaury the focus was on that the public relations practitioners should move towards more accurate and truthful messages. The model is commonly used by the government agencies, law enforcement agencies and military units. The two way asymmetric model shows that feedback system is significant to the practitioner but aim was not to improve the organizational practices but to influence the attitudes of the audiences (Gregory 2010). Problem Gambling leads to people losing out the right track of mind and getting involved in other heinous crimes and activities as they are always in desperate need of money. There are also situations where a gambler is known to be in such a huge debt that he killed his family and himself in order to get rid of the problems (Sheehan and Xavier 2009). Gambling can never be good for the society as ones gain clearly means anothers loss. Moreover since this game is dependent on luck, it is not logical to support such a sport.
